The Albanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it is in contact with Israeli authorities regarding the fate of an Albanian citizen believed to be on the 'Global Sumud' humanitarian ship flotilla, an international humanitarian mission that is trying to break the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza, Palestine.

Organizers of the Gaza aid flotilla said on Monday that Israeli forces had intercepted 10 of their ships and that contact had been lost with a total of 23 vessels in the eastern Mediterranean, Reuters reports.

Also on board this flotilla is the activist from Albania, Baki Goxhaj, for whose fate the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs seems to have been put into motion, saying it is in contact with Israeli authorities on this issue.

"Through diplomatic channels, the Ministry has been in communication with the competent Israeli authorities from the very beginning to provide full information on the situation and to guarantee respect for the rights of the Albanian citizen, including consular access, in accordance with international practices and conventions," the ministry's spokesperson, Alteo Hysi, told BIRN.

The spokesperson added that "The Ministry is following the matter with full priority and remains in constant contact with Mr. Goxhaj's family, and will provide further information on the further procedures that are expected to be undertaken."

The Ministry emphasizes that it will continue to follow the case closely and in close coordination with relevant authorities and partners.
