Albanian footballer Jonathan Gjoshe has spoken for the first time about the horror he experienced months ago during a knife attack on a train in England, where he was seriously injured after receiving seven stab wounds. The 23-year-old defender, who played for Scunthorpe United, recalled the dramatic moments of November 1 last year, when he was travelling from Doncaster to London.
"I was on the train and I was sitting quietly. Suddenly someone stabbed me from behind," Gjoshe told BBC Sport. The Albanian footballer recalls that the attacker initially wounded him in the shoulder, while he tried to quickly leave, warning other passengers.
“I was shouting: 'There's a man with a knife, run!' Some thought it was a joke, because the day before had been Halloween,” he said.
The attack left 11 people seriously injured on the train travelling through Cambridgeshire. Gjoshe managed to pull the emergency alarm and was then rushed to hospital, where doctors discovered he had suffered seven stab wounds to his arm, shoulder and bicep. The knife had passed very close to the nerves in his hand.
"I thought I would never see my family again," confessed the player, who underwent successful surgery.
After months of rehabilitation, he returned to training in March, but has yet to get on a train since the incident. "I can't trust things the way they were before," the footballer admitted.
However, he is determined to continue his career. After the end of the season, Scunthorpe United decided not to renew his contract, but Gjoshe hopes to find a new team.
"I am fully recovered and ready for any challenge. I just want another chance," he declared.
Meanwhile, the 32-year-old gunman, Anthony Williams, has been charged with 10 counts of attempted murder in connection with the attack and is expected to stand trial in October.
