Three people have been arrested and another is wanted, during two operations against fraud and theft, carried out by the Tirana Police.

Through a statement, the Police announced that in Operation "Shuma", two people, citizens Brian Serica and Skerdi Meta, were arrested and another was declared wanted after defrauding a 70-year-old man and taking 100 thousand euros.

They used artificial intelligence to introduce the elderly man, who was engaged in currency exchange, as his acquaintances.

It is learned that they have also used the name of businessman and publisher Bashkim Ulaj to achieve their objective.

"I am Bashkim Ulaj, give me 100 thousand euros," are suspected to be the AI-generated words that convinced the elderly man to hand over the money.

Meanwhile, in the "Image" operation, 37-year-old Gentian Bufazi was arrested, wanted on suspicion of fraud and theft in several businesses in Tirana.

The procedural materials for both cases were referred to the Prosecutor's Office for further investigative actions.

Police Announcement:

DVP Tirana/Two operations against economic crimes have been finalized in the last 24 hours to solve cases with consequences in the field of fraud and theft.

In one of the cases, the perpetrators deceived a citizen using artificial intelligence during communication.

As a result of in-depth investigative actions carried out by specialists of the Economic and Financial Crime Investigation Sector, as well as by the services of Police Commissariats No. 1 and No. 2, following reports from several citizens about cases of fraud and/or theft in their entities, 2 operations were finalized, in 24 hours, to uncover these crimes and bring their perpetrators to criminal responsibility. Specifically:

-As part of the operation codenamed "Shuma", citizens BS, 31 years old, and SM, 23 years old, were arrested, and citizen RH, 31 years old, was declared wanted. 

These citizens, using artificial intelligence and introducing themselves to a 70-year-old man, through messages, as his acquaintances, have deceived the 70-year-old man who was engaged in currency exchange and have taken 100,000 euros from him with the excuse that they would return it to him after a few hours. The 70-year-old, after not receiving the amount given at the promised time, immediately notified the Police.

The operation continues to capture the RH citizen, as well as to identify and capture the citizen who went to the 70-year-old subject and took the amount of euros, as well as other citizens who may have been involved in this case.

-As part of the coded operation "Image", the wanted citizen, GB, 37 years old, was arrested and detained, who is suspected of:

-on 14.08.2026, he took 20,000 lek from 2 businesses, on "Brigada VIII" and "Teodor Keko" streets, deceiving the employees that he was known to the owners of the entities and that he would return the money immediately, while on 21.08.2026, he stole a bag with 25,000 lek inside, from a business on "Skënder Luarasi" street. 

The investigation continues to fully uncover and document the 37-year-old's criminal activities.

The procedural materials were referred to the Prosecutor's Office for further action.

The State Police appeals to citizens and administrators of entities to show increased vigilance and caution against cases of fraud, and to never give money or data to unverified citizens who contact them in various ways, including videos created with artificial intelligence.

Also, the State Police invites immediate reporting of any suspicion, suspect, indication or case of falling prey to criminal offenses in this field, as only through rapid and close cooperation is it possible to identify and apprehend the perpetrators, as well as protect the property and assets of citizens.
