A wanted member of an Albanian criminal group has been discovered staying with a prison guard in Lantin .
He was arrested a few days ago, Belgian media reports .
Ermal Gjergji , 34 years old, is suspected of being a member of an Albanian mafia gang and was one of the leaders of the Lantini prison riots in 2020. Together with four other prisoners, he attacked the guards.
Three officers had to be taken to hospital afterwards. The prisoners had taken shelter on a roof after an incident in the yard.
Some detainees tried to climb a wall and one of them was injured when he fell. When the guards got there, some inmates attacked them.
After these events, Ermal Gjergji was sent to another detention center in Tournai, where he would serve a sentence of 30 months after these riots. Gjergji was convicted of criminal conspiracy, hostage-taking, extortion and even theft.
Gjergji was arrested a few days ago when a police check showed that an arrest warrant was still active against him.
Upon his arrest, the Albanian immediately announced that he had stayed with E., a woman in her 50s, who has been working as a prison guard in the Lantin prison detention center for more than 20 years.
The analysis of the phone conversations between E. and Gjergji has shown, among other things, that they had been on the phone for tens of hours.
According to the Belgian media, they probably met in prison, where E.'s sister was also imprisoned for ties to the Albanian mafia.
Gjergji is currently waiting in Lantini prison for transfer to another prison.
