Today marks December 8, Youth Day, marking 35 years since the student protests of 1990, the peaceful movement that ended the communist regime and paved the way for democracy. This date has been declared a national holiday since 2009, by decision of the Assembly, in honor of the students of December '90 and all the youth who became the main voice of historic change.

On December 8, 1990, a group of students and professors from the Universities of Tirana took the decisive step, becoming the initiators of the peaceful protests that led to the overthrow of the communist regime. Organized, they marched from Student City towards the center of Tirana, gathering more and more citizens to their ranks. Within a few hours, the crowd reached about 1,000 participants.

With the symbolic call "We love Albania like all of Europe", the young people demanded political pluralism, European integration and the establishment of Western principles of the rule of law. The Student Movement of 1990 remains the only peaceful movement that radically changed the history of the country.

The protests continued until December 11, when political pluralism was officially confirmed in a meeting with Ramiz Alia. Immediately after this moment, students began organizing for the establishment of the Democratic Party, marking the beginning of a new political era in Albania.

Student movements and protests continued in the first months of 1991, culminating on February 20, 1991, when students, professors, and citizens gathered in "Skënderbej" Square, finally overthrowing the symbols of the dictatorship.

Today, December 8th remains a day of reflection for the sacrifice, courage, and determination of Albanian youth, who with their peaceful actions forever changed the history of the country.
