In Albania, the role of women in animal husbandry is high, even though they face many difficulties in this sector. Blerina Çela, a farmer in the village of Samaticë in Berat, along with her husband, has defied these difficulties by keeping a farm with 40 cows at a time when in the last 5 years their number in the country has decreased by 36%. She dedicates this progress to her relentless work and passion.

In a difficult time for livestock in the country, when the number of cattle has been decreasing in the last 5 years, Blerina Cela in the village of Samaticë, 25 km from the city of Berat, has been expanding the cow farm for 14 years. property of her family. After returning from emigration, she and her husband decided to breed cows, giving meaning to their lives in the small village of 1500 inhabitants. It was and is a difficult road, but Blerina is driven by passion and strength not to stop. Despite many difficulties, he managed to increase the number of cows from 3 to 40 and today produces over 500 liters of milk per day, 10 times more than when he started work.

"In the beginning it was difficult, with many sacrifices. Actually it was not worth it, but only our request. We were very demanding to move forward. When we went out to sell buckets of milk for a factory nearby, someone else was taking 3 liters more than me, I had a problem. We will take one cow, and another, that we have reached here", said Blerina Çela, a farmer, to the Voice of America.

Alongside her husband Dashamir, Blerina grows the farm a little bit every day. There were also moments when patience and faith had to be called for help. When everything seemed to stop working. When the husband had to do another job to keep the stable afloat.

"There have been moments when Dashamiri spent the income that he worked with sacrifice in emigration just to keep the stable standing. This work is simply my passion and my husband's, because it is hard work. I love you all year round from morning to dinner. He can look for you at midnight. You have to have a passion for it", continued Blerina Çela.

She has always had her husband's shoulder to lean on, but it is also a strong supporting shoulder for her.

"The woman has to sacrifice. When the woman goes to celebrate on the day she announces the marriage, she says that the rights are equal. While today I see many pampered women who say - why should I do the man's work. If you can, why not do it", continued Blerina Çela.

Her whole day in the service of cows has made Blerina to understand and feel when something is wrong with them. He says he gives them a lot of love and can always read what they want.

"If I enter the barn in the morning, I will know which cow is not well. I get it right away, and I know there's a problem. Like any person who reads his face when he is upset or stressed or when he is smiling. So are cows. When they are stressed, they understand", says Blerina Çela.

In the entire area around the village of Samaticë in Berat, the power of women has given life to agriculture and livestock, says Blerina for the Voice of America.

"They are all women at work. I have 40 heads, one has 10, the other has 9. All work. The area here also has greenhouses where women are employed. I believe that women are stronger than men, they make it. That the woman is what is needed both at home and in controlling the family, but also in the man's work", says Blerina Çela.

In the 15th year of working on the cow farm, Blerina Çela takes a safe step every day. It is currently working to increase milking standards, and to increase the number of heads, at a time when the livestock sector in the country is not in its best days. In the last 5 years, the number of cows has decreased by 36% and has reached 298,000, and as a result, it has led to a decrease in milk production. The Ministry of Agriculture is improving several subsidy schemes for livestock, in order to curb this decline.

"I hope they are good decisions, so that it gives us the courage to work even harder. We are young, we can go further with the expansion of the farm. Why should we get milk from abroad, when we have domestic production", says Blerina Çela.

Blerina is the mother of three children, the eldest daughter is 17 and the youngest is 3. There is no clear line between her two loves, the cow farm and her family. But one thing I know very well, that these loves have kept him strong on his feet.

"You don't give up the moment you see children whose wishes come true. You're sorry. I can't imagine selling the farm and seeing the stable empty. I can't imagine it", continued Blerina Çela.

Blerina does not give up, because success has given her strength to move forward. The whole conversation with him had tones of optimism. It is not in her language to complain about things that have not gone well. Soon it is expected that the family farm will be increased with 15 cows. It is waiting for them as a blessing and as an expression of what the effort will be rewarded sooner or later./VOA
