Appeal clarifies decision: Reasons why Turkish anti-Erdogan activist was left in
Julide Yazici

The Court of Appeal of General Jurisdiction has clarified the reasoning behind the decision, which left Turkish citizen Julide Yazici in custody for extradition purposes. The 32-year-old, known for her public activism against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had had asylum status in France for several years, was arrested in Rinas on August 5.

She was wanted by the Turkish judiciary, where she had been sentenced to 4 years and 2 months in prison by two levels of the judiciary for "providing logistical assistance to a terrorist organization" and "participating in a terrorist organization". At the core of the reasoning of the Appeals decision was the risk of the 32-year-old's departure, if she were released from detention.

According to the Appeal, there is a real risk that the young woman will evade extradition. Referring to the decision, Yazici appears to have had full knowledge of the criminal proceedings against her in Turkey.

"If during the investigation or trial phase the risk is related to evasion from the investigation or trial, in this specific case the current risk is related to evasion from the extradition procedure and from surrender to the authorities of the requesting state for the execution of the sentence," the court reasoned, A2 reports.

The appeal emphasized in the decision that the "house arrest" measure requested by the defense was not appropriate and did not guarantee effective supervision.

In the Appeal, the 32-year-old claimed that if extradited to Turkey, she would face persecution, discrimination and unfair treatment due to her political beliefs and participation in anti-government protests, and that she had no knowledge of the Turkish court's guilty verdict.
