Is leaving monkeys the next pandemic?

In its latest update the World Health Organization has stated that it does not believe that the outbreak of monkey pox will lead to a pandemic, like that of the coronavirus.

Rosamund Lewis, a WHO official, said today that it remains unclear whether infected people who show no symptoms of the virus transmit it to others.

About 300 cases of monkey pox virus were confirmed during May.

No deaths have been reported so far.

The symptoms of monkey pox are similar to those of smallpox: fever, fatigue, and blisters that spread to the face and body.

The World Health Organization said the disease is not dangerous and does not cause casualties if treated at the onset of symptoms but can be dangerous for children, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.

According to information so far it has been fatal in 3-6% of cases - an increase rate from poor health care in many African countries.

A species common in the Congo is more likely to be deadly than the West African variant that is now spreading outside the continent.
