Switzerland beats Algeria and secures ticket to the 1/8th of the World Cup

Switzerland has secured qualification for the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, after defeating Algeria 2-0 at "BC Place", in the first official match between the two national teams.

Although Algeria started the match better and created the first clear chance with Houssem Aouar, who wasted it from a favorable position, it was Switzerland who struck first. In the 10th minute, the talented Johan Manzambi broke through from the wing and served for Breel Embolo, who made no mistake in front of goal, scoring his second goal of this World Cup.

The first half continued with few clear chances. Denis Zakaria went close with a header, while Farès Chaïbi tested goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Late in the first half, Ibrahim Maza missed Algeria's best chance, shooting wide.

Switzerland sealed the victory immediately after the break. Just seconds into the second half, a miscued clearance by the Algerian defense gave Dan Ndoye the opportunity, who with a precise shot from about 15 meters doubled the advantage and scored his ninth goal for the national team.

After the second goal, the Swiss managed the game without being seriously challenged by their opponents. Fabian Rieder had the chance to extend the lead in the final minutes, but he failed to beat goalkeeper Luca Zidane.

With this victory, Switzerland recorded three consecutive victories at the World Cup for the first time in its history and extended its unbeaten streak to seven matches. In the round of 16, the Swiss will face the winner of the Colombia-Ghana match, while Algeria's adventure in the 2026 World Cup comes to an end.

Result: Switzerland 2-0 Algeria, Embolo 10', Ndoye 46'
