Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman has announced his resignation after the team was eliminated from the World Cup by Morocco in the round of 16. The Netherlands had every chance to make a significant run in the tournament, but Morocco defeated them 3-2 on penalties after Monday's match in Monterrey had ended 1-1 after extra time.

The Dutch were 1-0 up in the final minutes of a hard-fought match thanks to a goal from Cody Gakpo, but conceded a goal in extra time through Issa Diop. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville missed their penalties.

"Last night I made the decision to end my duties as coach of the Dutch national team," Koeman, 63, said in a statement posted on Instagram.

"We all shared the dream of making history in this World Cup, but we didn't achieve it. No one is more disappointed than me. As coach, the ultimate responsibility is mine."

Koeman also referred to the health problems of his wife, Bartina, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. "The last few years have made me realize once again that there are more important things than football," he said.

"Football has been my life, but health has no price. When a person you love fights a difficult battle, your perspective changes."

The former Barcelona player and coach, who has also managed English clubs Southampton and Everton, was in his second term in charge of the Dutch national team.

Meanwhile, Dutch football officials have condemned racist abuse online against Dutch players following their elimination from the tournament. The Dutch Football Association said: “Football brings people together, regardless of their origin or background. We have seen reactions online where players have been subjected to racist and discriminatory abuse following their team’s elimination. We take a clear stand against this type of behavior. Racism and discrimination have no place in football, on the internet or in our society.”
