France demolished Sweden 3-0 with two goals from Kylian Mbappe to advance to the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the New York New Jersey Stadium in the USA.
France scored just before half-time through Mbappe in the 45th minute. A cleverly worked corner between Ousmane Dembele and Michael Olise released Mbappe, who passed Viktor Gyokeres before calmly slotting into the bottom right corner past Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.
The goal gave Mbappe his ninth goal in World Cup qualifying matches, surpassing Leonidas and Ronaldo, both with eight, for the most goals scored by any player in the tournament's qualifying stages.
France doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Olise sent a brilliant pass through the legs of Viktor Lindelof to Bradley Barcola, who fired a powerful shot from inside the area, giving Zetterstrom no chance.
Didier Deschamps' team looked in complete control, moving the ball with confidence and precision while constantly threatening runs past the Swedish defence. Oliseh continued to orchestrate France's attack and his fifth assist of the tournament made him the first player since Thomas Hassler for Germany in 1994 to register five assists at a World Cup.
Mbappe sealed the victory in the 74th minute, perfectly timing his run to latch onto another pass from Olise that split the defence, before scoring a goal almost identical to his first goal he scored for Zetterstrom.
The two goals tied him with Lionel Messi on six goals in the race for the Golden Boot at the tournament, while leaving him one goal behind Messi's record for goals scored at the World Cup.
While Sweden exits the tournament, France will face Paraguay in the round of 16.
