Italy, the reigning champion of Europe, is out of Euro 2024 after being defeated by Switzerland with a clean score of 2-0. A goal by Freuler in the first half and another by Vargas as soon as the second half started sealed a match without history, dominated by Xhaka and his friends from the first minute to the last.
With Granit Xhaka from the first minute and with the captain's armband, the Helvetians were more demanding from the first minutes of the match.
The Albanian Xhaka provided a nice assist for Vargas in the 14th minute, with the attacker not coordinating properly. After this moment, it was Embolo who, alone with Donnarumman, was "hypnotized" by the Italian goalkeeper, who made a truly beautiful save just a few meters away from the striker.
It took the 37th minute of the match for Vargas to assist Remo Freuler, with the latter unlocking the game and giving Murat Yakin's men the lead. The first half of the match ended with these numbers, while the second half started with Vargas' super goal.
Just 29 seconds into the second half saw Switzerland find the second goal and "seal" the passage to the quarter-finals in Dusseldorf on July 6, as it awaits the result of the pair England - Slovakia to find out the next opponent. Italy's best chance was lost by Scamacca in the 73rd minute, who just hit the post in front of Sommer and missed the chance to restart the match.
On the other hand, Italy leaves in shame from a tournament that was the reigning champion. In Group B of Euro 2024, Italy had rivals Albania, Spain and Croatia, coming out with four points from the group ranked as the second place.
