A ghost, a shadow of himself. Even worse according to Thierry Henry: a harmful presence for his team, sacrificed on the altar of personal selfishness. Cristiano Ronaldo's debut at the 2026 World Cup with Portugal was a total failure: the Lusitanian national team was held to a 1-1 draw by the Democratic Republic of Congo, who did not give up after Joao Neves' early goal and managed to get a deserved point thanks to striker Wissa's goal.
CR7, at 41 years old, is a ghost
The statistics of CR7, who turned 41 last February and continues to be a goal machine at the pace (and lowest level) of Saudi Arabia, are merciless: zero shots on goal, zero dribbles, zero key passes, only 25 touches of the ball throughout the match, 3 lost possession. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was relatively easily controlled by the Congolese defense, showing the full weight of age that, despite the extraordinary care for his body, no longer allows him to have the speed and brilliance against much younger players.
Henry is one of the analysts for FOX Sports, the channel broadcasting the World Cup in the United States, and after the match he had no mercy for Ronaldo, criticizing him not only from a footballing point of view, but also from that of commitment to the team. The former European and World champion with France, now 48 years old, showed only one action with the (negative) protagonist CR7 to support his arguments.
"It's the team that should score, not you"
We are in the second half, with the score 1-1: Conceiçao breaks in from the right and throws a dangerous ball into the area, where Ronaldo dives to hit it, but sends it wide, while behind him Bruno Fernandes visibly protests.
"Now I'll explain what he's doing," Henry begins as footage of the action is shown, "Conceiçao is receiving the ball. Cristiano Ronaldo has been in that situation thousands of times. If he makes that move (i.e. attacking the space towards the goalkeeper), he forces the defender to make a decision and cover the six-meter area. But since he wants to score at all costs, he gets right into the trajectory of the pass for Bruno Fernandes."
"If he had entered the six-meter area, the defender would have been forced to follow him - continues Henry - And at that moment it would have been an easy goal for Bruno Fernandes. Instead, precisely because he wants to score himself, he prevents the pass to his teammate. So both players remain in the field of vision and it becomes easier for the defenders to mark them. That's my argument: it's the team that should score, not you. Did you see Bruno Fernandes' reaction behind his back? It was as if he was saying: 'Let the ball pass, make your run, create space for me to push it into the net'. But that didn't happen."

Cristiano Ronaldo's goalless streak in major tournaments with Portugal continues: he has now gone 10 games without scoring. A sad way to celebrate the record achieved today by the Madeira striker, who, by taking the field as a starter against Congo, became the oldest field player to start a match in World Cup history. CR7 also equaled – a few hours after him – the Argentine Messi as the second player in history to participate in six World Cup final stages.
