Last year, a 17-year-old boy was hit to death by a policeman who was driving drunk in his car.
Teenager Davide Pavan was returning home on his scooter when he was confronted by a car that had lost control.
After the accident that happened on May 8, 2022, the policeman was tested for alcohol and it turned out that he was positive for alcohol. Davide's mother Barbara Vedelago in an interview for Corriere della Sera says: Maybe, sooner or later, he too will become a father. And then I will find the strength to forgive him.” What happened that day? A policeman, who was returning drunk from a rugby match, lost control and crashed into the boy who was riding his scooter.
But in addition to the great pain that the parents were experiencing at that time, they also faced another surprise, which at first they thought was just a bad joke.
A bill came to his house asking him to pay 183 euros for cleaning the place where the accident happened, from blood and other dirt.
Practically, the family of the murdered young man had to pay out of their own pocket for the cleaning of the place where Davide lost his life. Not only that, but a few days ago the police agreed to a plea deal that required a guilty plea and a three-year, six-month prison sentence.
"I know very well that even if that policeman had gone to prison, I would not have returned the boy, but I think that the law is still very lenient towards those who cause an accident. But the whole system is flawed and the cleaning bill is just one of many episodes. In these sixteen months, me, my husband and Davide's younger brother have felt abandoned, as if our pain didn't matter", says Davide's mother.
