The men's marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya has died in a tragic accident in his country. The 24-year-old was killed along with his coach, Gervais Hakizimana from Rwanda, after losing control of the vehicle while driving in Kaptagat at 11pm local time.

World Athletics president Sebastian Coe wrote on X: “We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana. On behalf of all of World Athletics, we send our condolences to the families, friends, teammates and the Kenyan nation."

“It was only earlier this week in Chicago, where Kelvin set his incredible marathon world record, that I was able to officially ratify his historic time. An incredible athlete who leaves an incredible legacy, he will be sorely missed."

Kiptum's marathon world record of 2:00:35, set at the Chicago Marathon in October last year, was ratified just a few days ago by World Athletics. The 24-year-old had only switched to marathon running from shorter distance events a year before setting that record pace.

He had also recently announced plans to become the first athlete to run an official marathon in under two hours, in Rotterdam in April.
