The FA will consider appointing an interim manager in a bid to lure Pep Guardiola back as England manager if he decides to leave Manchester City in 2025.

While not the federation's first choice to host, the Catalan represents an exceptional candidacy.

The priority now is for a manager who understands the culture of the national team, which Guardiola is perfectly suited to after spending eight years in England and supplying so many players.

There is now a feeling within the City club that Guardiola could leave at the end of the 2024-25 season.

The coach has previously expressed interest in managing a national team.

The federation wants to end England's long wait for an international trophy, as Guardiola is believed to have no particular interest in managing Spain because of his Catalan identity.

The qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup start at the end of March. So the English federation is thinking that the coach of the U-21 representative, Lee Carsley, can start the job as a commander in the national team and if he is successful he can be promoted if Guardiola changes his mind.
