Xhačka appeals to the EU: A clear signal is needed, a preliminary deadline for
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka

The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Olta Xhaçka, calls on the European Union to set a preliminary deadline for the integration of the Western Balkans region into the EU, a call that comes at a time when Greece is threatening Albania with blocking membership due to the issue " Beleri".

Xhaçka participated in the international conference "Quo Vadis Europa?" at the invitation of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy and Security, Josep Borrell.

During her speech, in the session "Enlargement and Neighbourhood/Western Balkans on the way to the European Union", Minister Xhačka emphasized that the crisis caused by the war in Ukraine woke up the European Union and forced it to think strategically regarding the issue of enlargement.

"It took a fight, but today the EU is focused like never before and is showing the will to act strategically towards the Western Balkans. There is a real change in the EU's approach to the region, which we can hope will last and become concrete in the future", said the Albanian chief diplomat.

She emphasized that the EU should give a clear signal by defining a preliminary timeline for the integration of the region, which, according to her, would provide a framework and a clear objective of what should be achieved and when.

"We hope that the EU will work with us for economic and social convergence because without helping the region to narrow the development gap that has widened in recent years, we will hardly reach it further on the road to the EU. Last, but certainly not least, I want to emphasize the need for messages of support and encouragement from our European partners and a commitment from their side that the expansion will be based on merit", said Xhaçka.

Political leaders from EU member states, Ukraine and other candidate countries, MEPs, university professors and experts on the most important geopolitical issues participated in the conference organized in Snatander, Spain.
