Tensions in the North of Kosovo, the American ambassador calls the new

The American ambassador in Pristina, Jeffrey Hovenier, has called the three new Albanian mayors of Zveçan, Leposaviç and Zubin Potok to a meeting.

The head of Zubin Potok, Izmir Zeqiri, told Radio Free Europe that he will attend the meeting with Ambassador Hovenier and other diplomatic representatives.

Zeqiri said that the meeting will be held at 9:00 a.m. at the European Union office in Pristina.

Asked if during the day he will go to his office in the facility of the municipality of Zubin Potok, Zeqiri, he said that he cannot know for now.

"I don't know if I will go to the office today. I have a very busy schedule. We will see during the day", said Zeqiri, who is from the ranks of the Democratic Party of Kosovo.

It is not yet known if the other presidents will participate in this meeting.

On May 29, groups of local Serbs gathered in front of municipal buildings in the north to oppose the new Albanian mayors.

In addition to the Kosovo Police, which is located in front of the municipal buildings, an increase in the presence of members of the NATO mission in Kosovo, KFOR, has been observed in the north.

After clashes between the Kosovo Police and local Serbs on May 26, the United States strongly condemned what it described as "violent measures" by the Kosovo Government.

The American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said that the actions of the Government of Kosovo "escalated tensions unnecessarily".

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has stated that he understands the concerns of international partners, but "any other option would be a failure to fulfill constitutional obligations".

The local elections in the north were held after last November, the heads of the four northern municipalities, from Lista Serbe - the largest party of Kosovo Serbs - resigned.

This party abandoned all the institutions of Kosovo, due to the decision of the Government in Pristina to carry out the process of re-registration of cars with illegal Serbian license plates.
The elections were boycotted by the Serbian majority population in that area, which now does not accept the results, namely the new mayors./VOA
