Today, Serbian citizens are expected to protest in front of the municipal buildings in the north of Kosovo, where on May 26 there were clashes with the police who accompanied the new mayors to enter their offices.
In the early hours of the morning, groups of citizens have gathered in the municipalities of Leposaviç, Ybuti Potok and Zveçan where there is an increased presence of police forces.
According to Kosovo media, it is reported that in Zveçan the police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters. Meanwhile, within the framework of these announced protests, the students will also boycott the lesson today.
On May 26, there were clashes between Kosovo special forces and Serbian protesters who gathered in front of municipal buildings to prevent the newly elected mayors from entering to begin their duties. It took the intervention of the police to allow the elected presidents to enter their offices.
This caused an increase in tensions, where there were violent clashes between the protesters and the police, which resulted in the injury of 5 of the officers. Gunshots were also heard in some of the municipalities and barricades were erected.
In response, Vucic raised military readiness in Serbia and moved troops near the border with Kosovo.
Regarding the tensions in the north of Kosovo, there were many international reactions, where the USA and the EU condemned the violent intervention of the Kosovo police and asked the Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, to avoid such actions, which they called 'provocations'.
On the other hand, Kurti and Osmani, in response to the statements of the internationals, described the intervention of the police in the north as part of the exercise of legitimacy with the argument that the newly elected presidents should start their duties on the day the law determines.
