How did the disappearance of 3-year-old Madeleine McCann shock the world?
Madeleine McCann

It was May 3, 2007 when the lives of Kate and Gerry McCann would change forever. They went on holiday together with their 3 children Madeleine, Amelie and Sean and some of their friends at a tourist resort in Portugal.

In the evenings that followed, the British couple dined with their friends at a restaurant 50 meters away from where they were staying. Families took it in turns to go and check on their children throughout the night.

On one of these nights, the children are put to sleep, but their door was left open by Kate and Garry. After returning from dinner Garry notices that the position of the bedroom door is different from other nights.

He enters the room and sees all three of his children sleeping peacefully. He returns to the restaurant, but stops for a chat with someone on the way. Kate finishes eating and goes back to the room. She notices that the children's bedroom door is wide open but as she goes to close it a little, a gust of wind knocks it over. She sees that the window is open and the shutters are up while 3-year-old daughter Medeline is missing. The parents raise the alarm about her disappearance and notify the police.

"We ask that anyone who may have information about Madeleine's disappearance, however trivial, to contact the Portuguese police and help us bring her back safely. Please let her come home to her mom, dad, brother and sister."

Border police and airport staff were put on alert and hundreds of volunteers joined efforts to find the missing girl over the next few days, the case quickly becoming a sensation.

The question of what happened to Madeleine McCann is one that has haunted her family, detectives and the world at large for more than 15 years. Unfortunately, it is also a question that remains unanswered.

On 5 May 2007, Portuguese police revealed that they believed Madeleine had been abducted from her room and may still be alive somewhere in Portugal.

Police questioned a suspect and also searched his home, but when no evidence was found linking him to Madeleine, this lead was doomed to fail.

In June 2007, a Portuguese police officer admitted that vital evidence that could have helped find Madeleine may have been lost because the scene was not properly preserved.

Exactly 100 days after Madeleine's disappearance, Portuguese detectives admitted for the first time that the 3-year-old might not be found alive.

Then, almost a year later, in July 2008, with no answers or new leads to explain what happened to Kate and Gerry's oldest child, the Portuguese police shelved the case.

After desperate appeals from the family, Scotland Yard agreed to look into the case at the request of then Home Secretary Theresa May in 2011.

In the same year, exactly four years after their daughter's disappearance, the McCanns published a book entitled Madeleine. The book thrust the story back into the limelight and prompted then-Prime Minister David Cameron to ask authorities to look into the case.

In 2012, British police revealed they believed Madeleine might still be alive. They also revealed this image of what she would have looked like at the age of nine. In October 2016, the police team investigating the case was reduced from 29 to just four police officers.

But the operation was still ongoing and in 2020, the police revealed a German pedophile currently in prison as the prime suspect, Christen Buckner. Police in Germany continue to claim they have "concrete evidence" that Madeleine is dead, but this has yet to be confirmed and their investigation is ongoing, with Brueckner suspected of being involved in the McCann case.

The suspect was reportedly seen near the area where the little girl disappeared. He received a call on May 3, 2007, about an hour before the 3-year-old disappeared.

He is believed to have resided in Portugal between 1995 and 2007 and spent time living in his van there not far from the resort of Praia da Luz. Already in prison in Germany for the rape and murder of a 72-year-old woman, he has now also been charged with multiple sexual offenses, which allegedly took place between 2000 and 2007. German police recently launched a new search in Portugal, aided by by Portuguese and British authority.

"The German prosecutor's office and the police have a suspect, they have some information that they are not sharing with the general public and that is certainly the right thing to do. Given that the Portuguese police are supporting and facilitating this search, I think we have reason to be doubly hopeful. The first is that the German police is keeping pace, continuing to invest resources. And secondly, at this stage there must be a breakthrough so that Kate and Gerry, but also the rest of the world find out what happened to Madeline McCann."

Jim Gamble, a former detective who investigated the case, says there are many reasons to be optimistic that this case may finally be solved.

"I have never said whether Madeline is alive or dead, but the German prosecutor seems very confident that she is in fact dead, which is what makes me think that they have reliable information and information that they have not shared with the public. And that's why anything they do about this suspect is very interesting and potentially positive."

Even tourists in the resort of Praia da Luz hope that the new research will close the unsolved case.

"I hope they find him, but I don't know. 16 years have passed. A lot can happen in 16 years, but I hope they find something, also that the parents find peace."
