Spain deploys an air defense system to secure NATO summit

The Spanish military is moving an air defense system stationed in Latvia to neighboring Lithuania to help protect next week's NATO summit in Vilnius.

"We can confirm that Spain is contributing to the security of the NATO summit in Vilnius with a NASAMS air defense unit," the Spanish embassy said.

The NATO summit will take place in Vilnius on July 11 and 12, Germany has transferred "Patriot" air defense units to Lithuania to ensure the protection of the summit.

NASAMS, or the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System, was jointly produced by Norway and the United States of America.

The system is designed to counter air attacks by drones, missiles or aircraft.
