The Socialists do not give up on reducing the number of municipalities, even when this ambition "threatens" the political dialogue required by the EU.

"The EU has said consensus is best, but democracy works both in the EU and in Albania."

It is learned that the majority will present the project that divides the country between 40 and 50 municipalities. In an interview for A2, Arbian Mazniku, the socialist co-chair of the Special Commission for Territorial Reform, explains why some small municipalities will be locked up.

"Creating a smaller number of municipalities than we have today is a prerequisite for allowing municipalities to have more competencies."

"Some municipalities don't have the human resources, some don't have the residents. Some don't manage to sustain themselves financially," Mazniku said.

In addition to the number of municipalities, a new level of government will be added to the country. The 4 regions are the socialists' favorites: "At this moment, the regions are not affected. The 4 regions are the most appropriate."

While in domestic politics they can maneuver with the wishes of their neighbors for minorities, the socialists cannot create scenarios: "Minority municipalities are not affected."

The "touch" that will be given to Tirana will be more generous. Mazniku thinks that there will be a special chapter for the capital in terms of functions, where it is being considered to attach an international airport.

The Socialists leave a half-open door for the DP if it wants to reflect, although on the other hand they have also made plans on how to avoid public consultation, by bringing the draft to the Assembly as a legal initiative: "We need to approve the law at the end of September and beginning of October."

At the end of this session, in the session of July 23, Arbian Mazniku will present the majority report, where the new number of municipalities that will go to the next local elections will be made public.
