The United Kingdom has become the main destination where Albanian citizens, especially young people, are looking to leave. The route they are mainly following is through seeking asylum.

The final data published by the Office of Immigration Statistics, United Kingdom and processed by "Monitor" show that the total number of asylum applications from Albanian citizens in the United Kingdom was 15,925, marking a record level for this country.

Compared to previous years, asylum applications have increased significantly. In 2021, the number of applicants from Albania was 5,147, while in the period 2013-2018 it was on average less than 3 thousand people per year. From 2003 to 2011, applications did not even reach 200 per year (see chart: Asylum applications from Albanian citizens in the United Kingdom).

More worrying is the composition of asylum seekers according to age groups, as it is evident that young people are the ones who want to flee the country in any way. The data shows that nearly 58% of UK asylum applications in 2022 were from 18-29 year olds. About 13.7% of applications were made by children under 18, often unaccompanied, while 42% of applications were made by minors themselves as main applicants while the rest were dependent on someone else.

In total, 72% of applicants, or 11.3 thousand young people, were in the age group up to 29 years old. (see chart: Asylum applications in the United Kingdom by Albanian citizens, by age group, 2022).

It is not only young people who are fleeing. The second largest group of asylum seekers belonged to the age group of 30-49 years, with 27% of the total, which in a significant part are families, fleeing with children. Only 1.5% of asylum seekers were over 50 years old.

In dominance are the men who leave, with 84% of the total.

Albanians were the largest nationality applying for asylum in Great Britain in 2022, accounting for 18% of the total from around the world.

30 thousand applications for asylum in Europe in 2022

According to Eurostat data, (as of 2020 it reports data for the 27 countries of the European Union without the United Kingdom), in total there were 13.2 thousand applications for asylum in one of the countries of the European Union, the highest level since 2020 -a. Compared to a year ago, asylum applications increased by 16%.

Together with the United Kingdom, the total number of applications in Europe reached 30 thousand, the highest level since 2006.

The record of applications continues to be 2015, with about 69 thousand citizens who requested asylum in one of the countries of the European Union and the United Kingdom. While 2022 is the third highest year, after the influx of 2015-2016. While only in the United Kingdom the applications are at a historical record of all times.
