Prime Minister Edi Rama held a meeting with pensioners in Durrës, where he discussed the technicalities of the pension increase scheme.
Rama explained that the increase in pensions is a more complex process than the increase in wages, since the variety of pensions is based on the contributions made by employees today.
He also focused on Albania's past challenges, connecting the current situation with a "production infrastructure disaster" at the beginning of the democratization process.
This situation, according to him, has led to an increase in the number of pensioners, creating an unbalanced ratio between those who contribute and those who receive pension.
" There are some kind of charlatans who promise all kinds of strange things. Meanwhile, they raise all kinds of accusations and therefore it is important to speak directly based on the facts. First of all, it is time to have this discussion when we are in a situation where the economy is not only growing, but growing sustainably. All categories are benefiting from this increase. The only category that has not benefited from the increase is the category of pensioners, for whom we have done many things, but we have not yet done what you expect and which we have targeted since the first day that we have sat in the government. But why did it take us 10 years to have this conversation? Because increasing pensions is not like increasing wages. Wages increase based on taxes, pensions based on contributions. Today, each of you takes from the fund of those who are working today and pours a certain amount into social security. This fund is insufficient. Unlike salaries, pensions are the investment today for 15, 20, 30, 40 years of anyone who is at work. At the beginning of this democratization process we had a disaster of production infrastructure and we had a mass exit at a very young age. This has also increased the number of pensioners, causing the contributors to be placed in an unfair relationship with the pensioners ", said Rama.
