PASOK, the main party of the Greek left, has again attacked Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the inclusion of Fredi Beleri's candidacy in the list of candidates for the European Parliament of the New Democracy party.
During a television interview, MEP Evi Christofilopoulou said that the reasons for Mitsotakis' candidacy of Fredi Beleri for MEP are neither national nor European symbolic, but only calculated for electoral purposes.
According to her, the aim why Beleri ran is to stop the flow of New Democracy party voters towards the extreme right, while his collaboration with Agimi e Artë is mentioned some time ago. This candidacy for MEPs exposes Mitsotakis, who, according to the Greek left, is putting party interest over national interest.
The Greek leftists insist that Beleri is most needed as the mayor of Himarura, in order to effectively protect the rights and properties of the ethnic Greek minority in Albania.
According to Greek law, Beleri has the right to be a candidate. If Beleri is elected to the European Parliament, he will have to resign as elected mayor.
The latest polls of Greek public opinion after the announcement of the 42 New Democracy candidates for the European elections see Beleri's candidacy lined up in the top five winners.
