Ilir Alimehmeti, the leader of the DP campaign for the Municipality of Tirana, in an interview on Top News for journalist Dafina Hysa, revealed why the DP did not come up with a DP candidate, but chose to support the independent candidate Florian Binaj.

"We are absolutely not in normal conditions and under these conditions, the DP is for the first time supporting a candidate outside its ranks because the opinion has become that he has absolutely the best chances of winning the Tirana Municipality," Alimehmeti emphasized.

In fact, there have been important DP exponents on television who are of the opinion that you should have come up with a political candidate for the most important municipality in the country, Tirana. Do you really believe that all DP structures will support Binaj in this race, regardless of leadership?

Alimehmeti: It is true, every political force absolutely has its own opinions, and discusses them. Unlike perhaps the PS, we have no problem discussing our opinions openly, even here in the media, in public spaces and so on. But in the end, there is a final discussion and a decision-making and this decision-making is then followed and goes to the end and we are in a kind of time where we find ourselves facing a situation that has not happened before that the mayor of Tirana is in prison. And in this kind of situation and I remember that we are a few months after the May 11 elections that the OSCE-ODIHR has called unequal, that the Council of Europe has called that the state should be separated from the party, which means that we have a party-state. So we have many international arbitrators who speak very clearly about how the elections took place in our country. So, we are absolutely not in normal conditions and under these conditions, the DP for the first time supports a candidate outside its ranks because such has become the opinion that he absolutely has the greatest chances of winning the Tirana Municipality.

The structures of every party would like candidates to come from them. Binaj is non-partisan, but we can't say apolitical, but he is not part of any party.
