Prime Minister Edi Rama's speech at the official ceremony for the establishment of the Peace Board, which took place on Thursday in Washington, drew media attention not only for our country's commitment to sending troops to Gaza, but also for the appeal that Rama made to President Trump to do something about Hashim Thaçi, who is being tried in The Hague for war crimes.

"Let me very briefly draw your attention to another open conflict, closer to my country, where the leadership of President Trump during his first term brought Kosovo and Serbia closer than ever to a final peace agreement. The President of Kosovo, who, at that time, was brutally prevented from traveling to the White House to sign that agreement, in the presence of President Trump, and in fact this is what was done by that "sicario" prosecutor, who persecuted President Trump himself and for this became world famous.

Today, the President of Kosovo has spent six years in detention by a special court in The Hague, sponsored by a number of democratic states, some of them present here and who should be ashamed of that kind of international justice.

Just last week, Mr. President, another prosecutor funded by this great country and its taxpayers, requested 45 years in prison for him, a request that sent a shockwave of humiliation throughout a peace-loving country.

And at this point, only a few months stand between a man who rose from resistance to ethnic cleansing to become a peacemaker and a devastating outcome from a court that has so far failed, at every turn, to uphold the standards of democratic justice.

"For God's sake, Mr. President, let's do something before, as you say, very bad things can happen again," Rama said during his speech at the Peace Board, addressing Trump.

Although Rama did not mention the prosecutor by name, the American newspaper "The New York Times" reported that it was Jack Smith. He is a US federal prosecutor who is part of the group of charges against Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selim.

Smith personally read the indictment against Thaçi when he was the chief prosecutor of this court. In 2023, he began dealing with the case against Donald Trump and the allegations of misuse of classified documents that were raised against him.

Rama made sure in his speech that Trump understood who he was talking about and the personal connection he had with this prosecutor, whom he had declared he would fire as soon as he returned to the White House. “Sicario,” writes the “New York Times,” “ is a Spanish word and the title of a Hollywood blockbuster, associated with harshness or criminality.”

Smith has accused Trump of conspiring against the democratic process, alleging that he and his allies tried to obstruct the certification of votes and deceive the public with false claims of election fraud. In the case of the secret documents, Smith said that Trump withheld highly sensitive materials and obstructed government efforts to recover them.
