Fredi Beleri in prison, Tirana responds to "Greek friends": Refrain!

Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka has reacted after the statement of the Greek Foreign Ministry calling scandalous the decision of the Court of Vlora to issue a prison sentence for Fredi Beleri, the opposition candidate for the Municipality of Himara.

"It is almost impossible to understand how our Greek friends have the right to question a court decision in our country, when the evidence could not be stronger than that. Fredi Beleri has been caught in criminal activity against free and fair elections. We do not understand how the fact that he is a Greek citizen excludes him from the law as a citizen of Albania. We call on our Greek friends to refrain from statements that show a lack of respect for the independent institutions of our country", Xhaçka said through a post on Twitter.

The Greek Foreign Ministry described today's decision as scandalous if the evidence against it is not irrefutable. The announcement also states that it will affect Albania's relations with the European Union.
