"I would say "NO" to Scholz", Rama: No other immigration
Edi Rama

The Albanian government is determined: There will be no other agreement on migration except Italy. Prime Minister Edi Rama even affirmed to the German newspaper " Berliner Zeitung " that he will say 'no' even if he receives a call from the current chancellor Olaf Scholz or from the potential chancellor, such as Friedrich Merz.

Rama wants more developed relations between the EU and the Western Balkans.

"If you ask me if Albania will conclude a second similar agreement with another country, I tell you, no! This is unique and applies only to Italy, for two reasons, there must be a long-term European solution and relations between the EU and the Western Balkans must still develop. Then we could discuss many things."

But Rama sees the agreement with Rome as a possible European model.

"In my opinion, the issue of immigration requires pan-European solutions. It is the second most important issue after climate change. Migration cannot be stopped and any attempt to do so is politically short-sighted.”

Rama was in Germany for the Berlin Process Summit and "Berliner Zeitug" asked him about European integration, underlining that Albania's path has been slow, unlike that of Montenegro. But the prime minister remembers that now Albania is the country with the fastest progress in the region towards membership.

"In Podgorica, people tend to think very optimistically. However, if we look at the respective starting positions, then we are the country with the fastest progress. We have doubled our gross domestic product, the minimum wage has almost tripled and the salary in the public sector is 900 euros. These are numbers that ten years ago were unthinkable."

Rama sees 2030 as ambitious and realistic for EU membership:

"Albania is already ready for the EU. However, the requirement to be full members by 2030 puts undue pressure on the process and makes things more complicated."

Unlike neighboring Serbia, which has been invited to "BRICS", a group of countries led by Russia and China to oppose the US-led world order, Rama says emphatically that there is no other alternative but the EU, despite the challenges .

"First, "Brics" is a joke. Second, history has taught us the hard way that there is only one place we can rely on. This is Europe, the European Union. There is no alternative to this path. There's no temptation to look elsewhere because we've been somewhere else and we know what it's like there.”

Asked about Kosovo and its relations with Belgrade, Rama says that "Serbia ignores reality".

Despite the fact that Tirana and Belgrade are divided over Kosovo, Rama also sees opportunities for cooperation.

"Of course we have our differences, especially when it comes to Kosovo. Serbia still ignores the reality that Kosovo is a separate and independent state. And there is no return. This should not prevent us from working together on other issues, because there are many common interests. For example, even if Serbia is close to Russia and China, which Albania will never do, we still need a lasting peace."

For Prime Minister Rama, neighbors are neighbors and you cannot choose them. But you always have to work to improve and maintain the relationship with them.
