Socialist MP, against his party's current: Citizens' protest is worthy

MP Pirro Vengu spoke about Zvërnec and the debate surrounding plans to develop the area. Describing the protest as legitimate and worthy of being heard, Vengu said that the very open debate about the future of the area is an indicator of a healthier and more mature democracy.

According to him, Albania needs such discussions on the mode of development, the relationship with the environment and identity, as well as on the challenges brought by global competition.

"The real issue is that we are dealing with a worthy protest. Once we would call it European, today we can call it a new normality in our country. The debate about how we develop, how we protect our identity and ecosystem, or how we ensure long-term development, shows a certain health of our democracy ," Vengu said on "Vizion Plus". 

The MP from Vlora emphasized that the public discussion has been unfairly reduced to a resort, while the real issue is related to the development model of a national asset and the future of the residents of the area.

"We're not just talking about a resort, we're talking about the development model in a national asset. The residents of the area want development. They've lived there for decades, even centuries, and they want prosperity for their children. They want any development to be legal, but they agree that the area needs to be developed," he said.

Vengu underlined that often the absolute inviolability of a territory can turn into degradation, bringing to attention the problems related to the lagoon and the ecosystem of the area.

"Who talks about the need to rehabilitate the lagoon? Who talks about the damage that the alluvium and drainage channels of Vlora cause to this ecosystem? This is the daily life of the residents and these problems are talked about very little ," he said.

Commenting on the wire fencing of the area, Vengu described it as a meaningless and symbolically wrong act.

"The barbed wire fence is an inexplicable moral feudalism," he said, commenting on the act of violence a few days ago.

According to Vengu, the case of Zvërnec should serve as an opportunity to discuss with caution what development model Albania seeks and how a balance can be found between environmental protection, legality, and the well-being of local communities.
