Even Kosovo has not escaped the consequences of US President Donald Trump's executive order freezing funding for almost all foreign aid programs, pending the completion of a full review of the effectiveness and compatibility of these programs with the foreign policy of the United States of America.

The US Embassy in Pristina has confirmed that it is aware of the US Department of State's decision regarding the execution of the new foreign assistance order, which also affects funding and support for the Western Balkan countries.

This is the result of a broader US policy to realign its international assistance in line with its strategic priorities.

In this context, continued support for the countries of the region will be conditioned by the governments' commitment to democratic reforms, the fight against corruption, and the strengthening of institutions.

"The United States remains committed to supporting the Balkan countries on their path to development and stability, but we also expect a clear commitment to democratic values and the rule of law," a statement from US officials said.

The government of Kosovo, like that of Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina, is now expected to review the impact of this decision on their funding and cooperation programs with the US.

This process could bring changes to existing aid funds, directly impacting various sectors, while it could pave the way for new projects that align with President Trump's foreign policy goals.

Western Balkan leaders are expected to engage in consultations with US representatives to understand the impact of this decision and ensure continued support for key development programs, while it remains to be seen which sectors will be harmed or benefit from the restructuring of US aid.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been a key partner in Kosovo's development, investing more than $1 billion in support of political reforms, economic development, and strengthening state institutions.
