The British Embassy in Bosnia has confirmed that the United Kingdom has appointed a new British Special Representative for the Western Balkans, Karen Pierce, who will take up the post in the spring, when she will begin leading the implementation of Britain's strategic priorities in the region, including preparations for this year's Berlin Process Summit for the Western Balkans.
She is one of Britain's most experienced diplomats, a former British ambassador to the US and a former British Permanent Representative to the UN in New York – the first woman to be appointed to both of these positions.
Region of long-term importance
The United Kingdom will host the leaders of the six Western Balkan countries and other European leaders this year at a key international summit, the focus of which will be the joint fight against the use of this region as a transit route for irregular migration, with the British government committed to using all available tools in border control.
“The Western Balkans are of long-term importance to the UK and our partnerships in the region are key to our efforts to tackle irregular migration and combat the evil of human trafficking. The Berlin Process for the UK demonstrates our commitment to European security and the implementation of the UK government’s Agenda for Change,” said British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.
"Malignant Russian influence"
The Western Balkans are important for British and European security. It has been noted, as London declares, that the risk of instability is growing, that is, regional tensions are being fueled by malign Russian influence, and there is an urgent need to crack down on the criminal gangs that have made this region a major transit route for irregular migration into Europe.
The Minister for Border Security and Asylum, Angela Eagle, announced that the British government has already agreed to new agreements aimed at strengthening operational cooperation in combating organised migration crime, with countries such as North Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo.
