Two or three cups of coffee or tea a day protect against dementia. They reduce the risk of developing it by 18% and preserve brain function.

According to a fairly extensive study by Harvard University and Mass General Brigham Hospital in Boston, published in the scientific journal Jama, these two substances have bioactive components, polyphenols and caffeine, which are neuroprotective factors that reduce inflammation and cellular damage.

Epidemiologists analyzed data from about 132,000 individuals, followed for about 40 years, and compared data based on consumption of caffeine, theine, and decaffeinated, or decaffeinated, coffee.

In the first two cases, the data is very similar, with much more positive statistics on brain function, while the same was not true for those who did not consume coffee at all, or those who used decaffeinated coffee.

So, this study highlights the importance of caffeine as a key ingredient and the various benefits of coffee for the human body, to which is added the benefit on the brain and a factor against dementia.
