Japan is famous for its large number of centenarians and has the highest life expectancy for women in the world.
So what's the secret to an incredibly long and healthy life? In an interview with CNBC, the granddaughter of a centenarian Japanese woman reveals her aunt's secrets for maintaining her health and happiness as she ages.
The power of gratitude
Michiko Tomioka, a certified nutritionist and longevity expert, cites her aunt as a role model. Every day, without fail, she says "arigato" - thank you in Japanese.
She is grateful for her ancestors, her religious community, and the good health she maintains. "It taught me not to waste time and energy on things I can't control," says Michiko.
Limiting red meat
Diet plays a crucial role in the longevity of the Japanese. As Dr. Sophie Ortega has stated, “nutrition is the main reason for their vitality and longevity.” This centenarian follows this philosophy. She drinks green tea every day and bases her diet on vegetables, tofu and fish, avoiding smoking and significantly limiting her consumption of red meat.
She is a big believer in “mindful eating,” which means chewing slowly and savoring every bite. This is how she develops gratitude for food. Her favorite fruit is yuzu, a citrus fruit rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, which helps reduce inflammation and improve digestion.
Who you have around you matters.
One of her biggest secrets to a long and healthy life is the people around her. As Michiko says, her aunt places a lot of importance on relationships. “Family, friends, people in the community.”
She always welcomes her guests with tea and kindness and never lets anyone leave without a small, thoughtful gift. This sense of warmth and connection to others seems to be a foundation of longevity.
Acceptance of consumption, without interruption of action
Aging with dignity means accepting your limitations. This active woman appreciates everything she can still do and doesn't hesitate to ask for help when needed. Activity is her core value: she climbs the stairs, takes a bath alone, and meets with friends three times a week. Even the fact that she continues to cook her own meals shows how active and independent she remains.
The importance of spirituality
She climbed a steep mountain every year with her religious community. Today, she continues to recite the prayers every day, demonstrating the deep faith and inner strength that keeps her physically and mentally strong.
“My aunt is a true inspiration and I feel lucky to have her in my life. By adopting her lifestyle, I have found peace and courage that endure over time,” Michiko concludes.
