Death of famous actress, details revealed: Sophie Nyweide was pregnant

Actress Sophie Nyweide was pregnant when she died last week, according to a death certificate obtained by PEOPLE.

Nyweide, 24, died Monday, according to the Vermont Department of Health. She was found in a wooded area in Bennington, Vt., about 25 miles from her home in Manchester Center.

The circumstances of Nyweide’s pregnancy were not immediately clear, although a source familiar with the investigation tells PEOPLE that it appeared to be in the early stages.

Nyweide made her screen debut in Bella in 2006, before appearing in Mammoth, where she played the on-screen daughter of Michelle Williams and Gael García Bernal.

The former actress had many passions, including snowboarding and dancing.

“She seemed happy on a movie set, becoming someone else,” the obituary said in part. “It was a safe place for her.”

The obituary further said that her nature often led to people "taking advantage" of her and that she used art to depict her trauma and pain, noting that therapists, law enforcement officers and others who tried to help her "could not save her from her fate."
