Russia refuses to launch British satellites

The UK has rejected Russian requests for it to sell its stake in internet firm OneWeb to allow the launch of the satellite.

A Soyuz rocket carrying 36 OneWeb satellites is on the launch pad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Russian space agency Roscomos demanded assurances that the spacecraft would not be used for military purposes.

She later said she would not launch the rocket if the UK did not sell its stake in OneWeb - but Venture Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng denied this.

"There is no negotiation on OneWeb: the UK government is not selling its share," Kwarteng wrote on Twitter.

The UK government, which has been under pressure to withdraw the launch due to the war in Ukraine in any case, said it was continuing to discuss the situation with its partners on the OneWeb board.

OneWeb itself has made few public comments in recent days, not to endanger its staff in Kazakhstan.

UK taxpayers helped buy OneWeb from bankruptcy in 2020 through a ml 400m fund.

In an interview with Russia 24 television channel, Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin said the agency had contacted OneWeb and its partner Arianespace to seek "comprehensive legally binding guarantees" that the satellites would not be used for military purposes.

"If we do not receive confirmation by 21:30 on March 4, the rocket will be removed from the launch site and the satellites will be sent to the assembly and testing building," he added.
