A man in France discovered a gold treasure worth $800,000 this year while digging to build a swimming pool in his garden, local authorities announced.

The man notified local police after the discovery in May, and authorities allowed him to keep the gold because it did not come from an archaeological site, said the municipality of the town of Neuville-sur-Saone, in the east of the country.

According to local newspaper Le Progres, he found “five gold bars and many coins” wrapped in plastic bags. Police confirmed that the gold had been purchased legally and smelted about “15 or 20 years ago” at a nearby refinery. Because the bars had unique, traceable numbers, it was determined that they were not stolen.

According to the 19th-century French civil code, treasure is considered “any hidden or buried thing, for which no one can prove ownership, and which is discovered entirely by chance.” Ownership belongs to the person who finds it on his land, Le Progres reports.

The municipality added that the previous owner of the garden has passed away, and how the gold got there remains a mystery.

The current price of gold, according to Hartford Gold, is $4,017.33 per ounce.

Similar finds have been reported in other countries: in 2024, a couple in California found rare coins worth $10 million, while in 2023 a man in Germany found gold bars and coins valued at over $150,000. In 2022, more than 260 gold coins found by a British couple under their kitchen floor were sold at auction for about $1 million.
