For two years, from 2020 to 2022, a 9-year-old boy lived alone in an apartment in the town of Nersac, in southwestern France.

After the neighbors reported it to the authorities, the boy's mother was arrested and on Tuesday the court sentenced her to six months in prison, which she will serve at home with electronic monitoring (bracelet).

It all started in 2020, when neighbors noticed that the 9-year-old child was living alone in the apartment, eating canned food, covering himself with many blankets to cope with the cold in winter, while neighbors occasionally visited the child and left him food . According to the French press, the 36-year-old mother, who had custody of the son, lived in a nearby town with her partner and rarely went on her scooter to the apartment where her son was staying to leave food.

In the report of the local gendarmerie, it is said that the child took care of everything by himself, took the bus to school every day, took care of hygiene himself, while according to the testimony of a neighbor, he often stole the tomatoes he had planted on the balcony to eat.

The court heard that the 9-year-old was fed with cookies or canned goods, while a neighbor who lived in the apartment next door told the gendarmerie: "I made a small garden and the little one came secretly to get tomatoes to eat...".

The apartment where the unfortunate boy lived had no heating or electricity, so when it was cold the child wrapped himself in many blankets to keep warm.

But the paradox is that despite the difficult conditions in which he lived, he did not miss school and was an excellent student.

The teachers and other students never understood what he was experiencing. The mayor of Nersac, Barbara Coutrier, stated that the 9-year-old was always smiling, a very good student and a very kind child. She said: "There was no sign that he was an abandoned child."

A classmate of the boy told the media that the children at the school did not believe the 9-year-old when he told them that he eats alone and takes the bus every day to school alone. According to his classmates, the child did not leave the house after school.

After his mother's trial, the boy was placed in a foster family for a year. A neighbor stated that he never wanted to see his mother again and claimed that the 36-year-old rarely visited her son and when neighbors advised her not to leave him alone, she told them that "it's none of their business".
