Colonel Archibald Gracie

A letter written by Colonel Archibald Gracie , one of the most famous survivors of the sinking of the Titanic, has broken a world record at auction, selling for a staggering £300,000.

The letter, dated April 10, 1912, the day Gracie boarded the ship in Southampton, describes the colonel's first impressions of the Titanic.

“It is a beautiful ship, but I will wait until the end of my voyage before judging her,” he wrote in a poignant passage.

The item was sold by auction house Henry Aldridge & Son in Wiltshire, England, for five times its original estimated value of £60,000.

Auctioneers called this the highest price ever for a letter written on board the Titanic.

The letter, which bears Queenstown and London postmarks from April 1912, also describes details of life on board and the passenger's first feelings about the giant ship.

Gracie, during the journey, had helped women and children board lifeboats, before saving herself by clinging to an overturned boat.

The colonel later documented his experience in the acclaimed book "The Truth About the Titanic," one of the most important accounts of the tragedy that claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people.

This letter, rarely seen before on the auction market, is now considered one of the most valuable relics of Titanic history, according to experts.
