Nigerian officials have seized thousands of donkey penises that were to be exported to Hong Kong.

Although the capture of donkey genitalia is rare, donkey skins are often smuggled into countries such as China and find use in traditional medicine.

This illegal trade is drastically reducing the number of donkeys in Nigeria, while most of the population uses them as working animals.

A total of 16 bags of genitalia were seized last week at the international airport in Lagos, Nigeria's largest city.

What is behind the illegal trade in donkey parts?

British charity The Donkey Sanctuary estimates that around 4.8 million donkeys are trafficked and killed each year for their skins. Many of them are used to make ejiao, a traditional Chinese medicine.

In July, Nigerian customs seized donkey hides worth 114,000 euros.

Efforts to curb the practice include a 2021 proposal by senators to ban the slaughter of donkeys. This has not yet been passed into law.

The animal is facing extinction in Nigeria and cannot be bred in large numbers due to its low fertility rate.

According to the customs service, an investigation has been launched to learn more about the seized penises.
