GUERNIKA

In April 1937, German planes in the service of General Franco bombed and leveled the Basque city of Guernica. Picasso received the news in Paris, where he lived.

Shaken by the tragedy, he produced for a short time the painting that became his most famous work. In it, the author does not describe the event: we do not see ruined houses, nor armed soldiers, nor traces of red blood: the work will evoke anger and contempt for violence and war, whatever it may be. For this reason, it is full of symbolic values, such as the dove, a symbol of peace, the mother clutching the newborn baby, etc.

Although the fragmented forms look like a chaotic collection of elements, in reality the presentation is structured on the basis of a rigorous, almost classical organization. Art historians have considered it as a painting belonging to synthetic cubism.

The cold light of the lamp gives a space, at the peak of which dominates the impatient figure of the wounded horse, whose head turns in a cry of pain; the animal with the ragged belly, man's tool in war, resembles the human tragedy. The figure of the bull opens the composition on the left and under his eyes the drama unfolds: the bull (a typical figure of Spanish culture), which here mingles with the shadow of death, recalls the Minotaur, the emblem of irrationality.

Human figures can also be seen in the work, such as the dead warrior lying on the ground and female figures: the woman with the lamp reaching out of the window, the woman in flames, the woman with the dead child in her arms, and the naked woman running away with a view anxious headed up.

Figures presented in many forms and disintegrated by the fall evoke the loss of man. Simultaneous vision on a single eye plane makes their vision very dramatic. The very length of the canvas, almost 8 meters, underlines the high tragedy of the event, before which no human conscience can close its eyes.

Picasso began this painting on May 1 and finished it on June 4, 1937. He stated: "In the panel I am working on... and in all my works I clearly express my disgust and hatred for the military caste that plunged Spain into a ocean of pain and death.”
