Google parent Alphabet indicated that it is integrating artificial intelligence across its businesses, including an improved Gemini chatbot. Meanwhile, the company is racing to compete with AI rivals.

This wave of announcements from Google highlights their content refresh efforts since the launch of Microsoft-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT in 2022, which wowed audiences around the globe.

Among the latest Google news was an innovation in the Gemini 1.5 AI model family known as Flash that is faster and easier to access. It's a prototype called Project Astra that can talk to users about anything captured on their smartphone camera in real time

The product launch at Google's annual event in Mountain View, California, was followed by a shorter showcase from rival OpenAI. The latter demonstrated how ChatGPT could voice responses in human-like intonation to any written or visual request.

Time after time, the two sides covered similar ground, underscoring the fierce competition between the two AI developers.

For example, Alphabet's AI unit Google DeepMind has been working to build technology that can perform everyday tasks for consumers. Early results have been shown in Project Astra, a tool that can use a smartphone camera and make inferences about the world around it.

In a demo video, a user deployed it to identify a speaker and find glasses they had left in another part of the room. The company also raised questions about how it could pair Project Astra with what it calls Gemini Live, a potentially more natural voice and text "assistant" than Google's of the past.

Another area in which Google showed how it is taking on competitors was video generation. OpenAI has been promoting its movie-making software among Hollywood executives, fascinating and disturbing the creative industry.

Google announced improvements to its Gemini Pro 1.5 model that is able to understand and generate a lot of data. AI could potentially answer questions when given thousands of pages of text or more than an hour of video to process. The Pro model will also be available to subscribers of Google's Gemini Advanced service.
