Researchers estimate that more than 37 million people globally have experienced atrial fibrillation (Afib), a cardiovascular condition that causes irregular heartbeats, according to medicalnewstoday.com.

A new study found that drinking a cup of coffee a day can help reduce the risk of recurrent AFib episodes by up to 39%.

There are a number of risk factors for AFib.

Some of these risk factors are not modifiable, such as age or genetics, while others are modifiable, including maintaining a normal weight, keeping blood pressure levels under control, and having a healthy diet.

Past studies have shown that limiting or avoiding certain substances, such as alcohol, sugar, sodium, and caffeine, can help reduce a person's risk of AFib.

Now, a new study published in JAMATrusted Source offers new insight that suggests caffeine may not be as harmful as once thought.

"Afib is probably the most common heart rhythm disorder we treat today," said study author Gregory Marcus.

"It is greatly influenced by lifestyle. We regularly counsel patients on the importance of weight management, sleep quality and regular exercise, which play an important role in the development and recurrence of Afib," he added.
