Popular American singer Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday evening in Ventura County, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
She was stopped around 9:30 p.m., checked into the police around 3:00 a.m. Thursday, and was later released. Her vehicle was seized by authorities.
Spears' representative said the incident was "unfortunate and unacceptable" and that the singer would take appropriate steps to comply with the law, while the family is preparing a support plan for her. Britney Spears is due in court on May 4.
This isn't the first time Spears has had legal trouble. She was accused of a simple "hit and run" incident in 2007, which was later dropped after Spears paid damages.
The following year, she was hospitalized for a psychological evaluation, and her father, Jamie Spears, subsequently took custody of her assets. This custody was extended for 13 years, prompting fans to start the "Free Britney" movement to stop it.
The guardianship ended in 2021 and since then Spears has been seen mainly through social media posts, often in videos of her dancing on Instagram.
