Iranian attack on US embassy in Riyadh more severe than reported

Iran's drone attack on the United States embassy in Riyadh has caused much greater damage than initially reported.

This is reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing current and former American officials.

According to reports, two drones exploded in a secure area of the diplomatic compound on March 3, severely damaging three floors of the building and including the US intelligence station.

Officials said the fire caused by the explosions lasted for about 12 hours, while some parts of the embassy were irreversibly damaged.

Contrary to initial statements by Saudi Arabian authorities about limited damage, American sources emphasize that the impact of the attack was much more severe.

According to details, the first drone penetrated the diplomatic area's air defenses and hit the complex, while a second drone exploded immediately after it, expanding the damage.

The attack occurred at night, at a time when the building was unmanned. Officials stress that if it had happened during the day, it could have had serious consequences with many casualties.

"Iran managed to produce a domestic weapon, launch it over great distances and hit the embassy of its main adversary, which means it could have hit any target it wanted in the city," said former CIA official Bernard Hudson.

He added that the lack of transparency about the real damages raises suspicions that the consequences may be even greater than publicly acknowledged.

The attack on the embassy is part of a wider wave of missile and drone attacks by Iran and its allies on American targets in the region, including military bases and diplomatic missions in several Middle Eastern countries.
