US President Donald Trump has requested $152 million to reopen the infamous Alcatraz prison, as part of the proposed budget for fiscal year 2027.
Alcatraz, also known as "The Rock," was once considered one of the most dangerous prisons in the US, and in recent years has served as a tourist attraction under the administration of the National Park Service.
The BBC writes that according to the budget request, the funds will be used "to rebuild Alcatraz as a modern, secure prison facility," covering the first year's expenses.
The plan has been met with skepticism by politicians in California, who have raised questions about the ultimate cost and the difficulties of managing the prison as an active institution.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the proposal "absurd" and "a waste of taxpayer money."
Alcatraz was closed in 1963, as it was three times more expensive to operate than other federal prisons.
Today, as a tourist attraction, it generates about $60 million a year. Criticisms of Trump's plan include the lack of running water and sanitation on the island, as well as the fact that supplies must be brought in by boat.
Trump has stated that he will use the rebuilt prison to house "America's most ruthless and violent criminals."
Alcatraz once housed famous prisoners such as Al Capone, Mickey Cohen and George "Machine Gun" Kelly, and has also become known for classic films such as "Escape from Alcatraz" and "The Rock."
