Mystery of Turkish professor's disappearance solved after 17 years

One of the most shocking cases of recent years in Turkey has resurfaced after almost two decades of silence, shedding light on a mysterious crime that had been literally buried.

51-year-old mathematics professor Hikmet Akçay, who mysteriously disappeared in 2006 in Istanbul, is suspected of being murdered by his former student and three associates, in an environment full of obsession, threats, passions and an attempt to completely destroy evidence.

The case was solved just five months before the statute of limitations for the crime expired, when the Istanbul Police Department's Missing Persons Directorate, following the orders of Chief Selami Yildiz, unearthed old case files that had been classified as unsolved for years.

Hikmet Akçay was reported missing on May 2, 2006 by his brother Ismet, who said he had not heard from him for days and feared for his life.

Despite initial investigations at the time, the case remained deadlocked, while a burned body found in the Silivri area was not identified and was eventually buried in an unknown cemetery.

A modern review of the evidence changed everything, the police traced the victim's contacts with Esin B., his student when she was in high school, with whom he had maintained a close and problematic relationship for years.

Esin B., now 42, who works for the Istanbul Municipality sports organization, was found to have maintained contact with the professor even after he reached adulthood and entered university.

She visited his home, received financial assistance, and they maintained frequent communication, which raised suspicions among the authorities.

Telephone service records showed that on the day Akçay's cell phone was deactivated, April 27, 2006, four people were moving in coordination: Esin B., chemistry professor Erdogan Y., her friend Zemçi S., and relative Hakan D.

In a large-scale coordinated operation carried out on Teacher's Day, November 24, special forces arrested the four suspects in Istanbul and Gaziantep. They initially denied any involvement, but under the weight of the evidence, their statements revealed a raw and chilling truth.

According to Esin B.'s account, Hikmet Akçay was furious when he learned that she was having an affair with the married chemistry professor, Erdogan G.

As she claimed, Akçay threatened to reveal the affair to her family and the professor's wife, which created an explosive atmosphere.

Tensions reached a peak on the day of the crime, when they met in Kocaeli. After a heated argument, they went to her house, where another confrontation broke out.

She claimed that the professor tried to strangle her and then, in a panic, grabbed a knife and fatally stabbed her.

Instead of notifying the authorities, Esin B. called her friend Zemçi S., who rushed home and together they decided to dispose of the body. Later, Erdogan G. was also notified, and played a crucial role in transporting it.

The body was placed in a red suitcase and transported by car from Kocaeli to Silivri. In a rural area, it was doused with gasoline and set on fire, in a horrific attempt to erase all traces.

After the crime, the perpetrators returned to their daily lives, discreetly monitoring developments through phone booths and avoiding any connection to the incident.

The burned body was later found, but without identification, buried in an unknown grave.

Old tapes found in the victim's home proved crucial. With the help of modern technology, the police amplified the audio and discovered conversations in which Akçay threatened Esin B., confirming the tense and blackmailing context of their relationship.

The four defendants were brought to justice and remanded in custody, while the case is expected to continue in court, shedding light on a crime that had been covered by silence and time for years.

This case proves that, even when the truth seems buried, it eventually returns to seek revenge.
