Numerous victims are reported from the gunfire that occurred during the start of classes at the Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, reports the American newspaper "ABC News". In advance, at least two dead and 20 injured are reported.
The perpetrator is "neutralized" and has "no active threat to the community," city officials said. The suspect is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sources said.
Students from preschool to eighth grade attend school at this institution. Young children dressed in their uniforms were seen leaving the school holding their parents' hands.
"I am praying for our children and teachers whose first week of school was tarnished by this horrific act of violence," Minnesota Governor Tim Walz wrote on social media.
Walz said state authorities are at the scene. Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the call.
President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that he is "fully informed of the tragic shooting."
"The White House will continue to monitor this terrible situation. Please join me in prayer for everyone involved!" he wrote.
The Department of Homeland Security is monitoring the shooting, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement.
"I am praying for the victims of this disgusting attack and their families," she said.
