The Universal Postal Union, a United Nations agency, announced that 25 of its member states have frozen shipments to the United States, in response to the uncertainty caused by the new tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

The agency promotes cooperation between postal services in its 192 member countries, said it had conveyed its concerns about these suspensions in a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio dated August 25, 2025.

"Postal operators in 25 member countries have already announced the suspension of their postal services in the United States, citing uncertainties related particularly to transit services," the UN agency said in a statement.

She did not name the countries, although Australia, Norway and Switzerland, among others, have already publicly announced such suspensions.

Last month, the Trump administration announced that it was eliminating the "de minimis" global exemption, which allowed goods worth up to $800 to enter the United States tax-free and also had minimal red tape. The measure is expected to come into force on August 29.
