Polar vortex storm sweeps across US, 11 dead and millions without power

A dangerous winter storm has swept across the US, leaving at least 11 people dead and hundreds of thousands of homes without power. US media say the deadly cold will continue throughout the week.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), schools and roads across the country have been closed and flights have been canceled, as life-threatening conditions stretch from Texas to New England.

More than 17,000 flights have been canceled in total during the storm. Schools in major cities have canceled classes or switched to remote learning for Monday. 15 states are facing a snowpack of 30 cm or more.

Nearly 90 million people are under extreme cold watches or warnings, sparking fears among those who are homeless or without power for days.

The damaging ice left more than 1 million customers without power across the Mid-Atlantic and South. Outages could last for days in Nashville, Mississippi, which was hit hard, and beyond.

Heavy snow and hail fell on the northeast Interstate 95, with several cities, including Boston, expecting their heaviest snowfall in years.

The arctic air that is coming in after this winter storm will exacerbate its effects long after it is over.

Of the more than 1 million customers who lost power on Sunday, some could be left shivering without heat as temperatures drop to between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. What's more, pipes could start to burst due to the lack of heating.

Extreme cold with ice and snow will make it more difficult for crews to restore power, as low temperatures will continue throughout next week.
